Why does my dog get itchy after swimming in chlorine?
The chlorine in your pool can cause skin irritations and itchiness for your dog, especially if they have sensitive skin or if the chlorine is not properly balanced. Chlorine is also known to strip the natural oils from a dog’s skin and coat, leading to dryness and itching.
If your dog spends a lot of time in the pool, it can also increase their risk of an ear infection, as the moisture creates the ideal environment for bacterial growth. It’s important to rinse your dog off well with fresh water after swimming in a chlorinated pool, and to keep an eye on them for any signs of irritation.
If your dog is showing signs of skin irritation,
here are some things you can do to help:
- Rinse off: After swimming, make sure to rinse your dog off with plenty of fresh water. This will help to remove any residual chlorine on their skin and coat. Pay special attention to their ears and between their toes. Try these thick wipes to help with both!
- Use a specialized shampoo: Look for shampoos that are specifically formulated to help combat the effects of chlorine on a dog’s skin. These shampoos can help to soothe irritated skin and remove any lingering chlorine. Try Honest Paws 5-in-1 Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner, an all natural formula with aloe and oatmeal.
- Moisturize: You can use a moisturizing lotion or a specialized dog skin conditioner to help soothe and hydrate your dog’s skin. Look at Warren London’s Hydrating Butter Leave In Conditioner. It smells so nice and I love being able to leave it in!
- Consult with your vet: Always talk to your vet if your dog’s skin irritation persists, or if they show signs of an allergic reaction. They may recommend a topical treatment or medication to help soothe your dog’s skin.
